About Emirates Amateur Radio Society (EARS)

Emirates Amateur Radio Society (EARS) is the National association of Radio Amateurs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). EARS is a not-for-profit organization, supported by the UAE Ministry of Community Development under the Ministerial Resolution No. (66). EARS works closely with Telecom Regulatory Authority, TRA for licensing and spectrum related matters and is headquartered at Sharjah Scout mission Building, the Emirate of Sharjah.

The Society is dedicated to increase awareness and understanding, development of the science and practice of amateur radio. EARS represents the interests of licensed radio amateurs in UAE, both nationally (through TRA) and internationally (through its membership of IARU)

The stated objectives of the Emirates Amateur Radio Society are: –

  • Provide & Support evidence-based research and strategic direction for issues related to Amateur Radio.

  • Promote Amateur Radio and its role in facilitating emerging communication technologies, along exchange of such information and ideas among its members and Relevant associations.

  • Educate and encourage the next generation of Radio Amateurs in United Arab Emirates.

  • Lobby the National regulator, TRAto protect and enhance the privileges of licensed Radio Amateurs.

  • Provide emergency and/or auxiliary communications service to public safety and public service organizations if required.

EARS owns and operates 5 VHF repeaters across the country. Society has a full-fledged radio room with multiple HF, VHF and UHF operating positions, along with state-of-the-art antenna systems. EARS has three full time support staff to handle the affairs of radio amateurs for licensing, import of equipment and for the upkeep of the office& club station.

To legally operate an amateur radio station and acquire an internationally unique call sign, one is required to attend the prescribed training and pass an examination, be registered, and licensed with the Telecom Regulatory authority of UAE. The courses and the exams are organized and conducted by EARS under the auspices of TRA. Training courses for new radio amateurs are conducted in both Arabic & English and are led by experienced ham radio operators who volunteer their time as part of giving back to the world’s greatest hobby.

EARS offers renewable membership for U.A.E Nationals, Expatriate Residents,and honorary memberships for those who have provided valuable service and contribution to amateur radio, electronics & communications domains.
